130. Alder Gustafson, wood-fired extruded vase

130. Alder Gustafson, wood-fired extruded vase

For Gustafson and the production process, see item 128.

Dark gray clay, coated with an iron-rich slip and wood-fired. Weight: 158 g (5-1/2 oz). Roughly 4.2 cm (1-5/8 in) square. Height: 9.5 cm (3-3/4 in).

This sits directly on the base. The artist’s mark, “al ru” is incised into the base. After extruding, the column was arched backwards to form a curved column. The top and bottom were closed off, and a small whole was drilled in the upper right-hand corner of one side to create the mouth for the vase. The surface of this has a few short, shallow vertical ridges, but is otherwise smooth.

This was coated with an iron-rich slip and then wood-fired. The colors range from a dark brownish red through a dark brown. Visible on two sides are the marks left by the tips of the artist’s fingers as he dipped the pot into the slip.

Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
