129. Alder Gustafson, salt-fired extruded vase

129. Alder Gustafson, salt-fired extruded vase

For Gustafson and the production process, see item 128.

Dark gray clay, coated with an iron-rich slip and then salt-fired. Weight: 176 g (6 oz). Roughly 4.2 cm (1-5/8 in) square. Height: 8.7 cm (3-1/2 in).

This sits on four small rectangular feet a scant quarter of a centimeter (eighth of an inch) high. On the base inside the four feet is inscribed “al ru.” After extruding, the top and bottom of the column were closed off with squarish slabs of clay. The slab on the bottom is slightly larger than the column. The walls of the column are irregular and slant to one side. The walls are roughly 7.5 cm (3 in) high. A small, squarish column was affixed to one quadrant of the top to serve as the mouth of the vase. The surface of this is relatively smooth.

This was coated in an iron-rich slip and then salt-fired, giving the surface a slight sheen. Visible on two sides are the marks left by the tips of the artist’s fingers as he dipped the pot into the slip.

Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
