136. Evan Hestekin, Shino-glazed, wood-fired faceted bowl
For Hestekin, see item 134.
This sits on the base of the foot ring. The foot ring is about 1 cm (3/8 in) high on the exterior; the interior has been hollowed out to about 2/3s of that distance. The walls rise outward in a straight line at a shallow angle to about 1.2 cm (1/2 in) above the base; the width of the pot is about 12 cm (4-3/4 in) at this point. The walls then angle outward in more or less a straight line to the rim. The walls of the pot were divided into nine facets of varying widths. There are slight outward bumps at the top and bottom corners of each facet. Five horizontal ridges extending across the width of a facet were created by pressing down or up with the edge of a spatula-like tool. The surface of the pot is smooth except along the rim and the edges of the horizontal ridges.
With the exception of the base of the foot ring, this was coated in a Shino glaze and wood-fired to cone 10. There was significant carbon capture, resulting in colors ranging from a bluish gray to a dark gray. There is also a significant amount of crackling in the glaze. The glaze pulled away from the rim and the edges of the horizontal ridges, allowing the brown clay to show through.
