137. Andrew H.S. Mazzaschi,  Shino-glazed  yunomi, altered shape

For Mazzaschi, see item 103.

Brown clay, Shino-glaze with added decorations in birdmatte white, plum, and jade; foot ring left unglazed. Weight: 302 g (11 oz). Rim diameter: 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in); maximum diameter: 9 cm (3-1/2 in); foot ring diameter: 4.9 cm (1-7/8 in). Height: 9.3 cm (3-5/8 in).

This sits on the base of the foot ring. The foot ring is about 0.6 cm (1/4 in) high on the exterior; the interior was hollowed out to about this distance. The artist’s mark, the letters “AHSM” inside a square was impressed faintly into the center of the base. The exterior of the foot ring has been carved inward toward the top to form a convex arc. Above the foot ring the walls of the pot rise in a continuous convex arc to the rim. The maximum diameter lies 5.4 cm (2-1/8 in) above the base. After throwing, the walls of the pots were cut into shallow diagonal grooves from just below the rim down to almost the bottom of the walls, where they begin to curve inward sharply toward the foot ring. The shape of the pot was then altered to form seven vertical sections of varying widths. The pot is smooth except at a few places along the rim and the edges of the ribs between the vertical sections.

This was glazed in Shino. The edges of the vertical grooves were outlined in plum. There is a U-shaped irregular band of jade green extending across half of the exterior wall and an irregular band of birdmatte white just under the rim on the exterior. The red “scorch marks” characteristic of Shino glaze are visible on the interior of the piece.

Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
