135. Evan Hestekin, wood-fired yunomi

135. Evan Hestekin, wood-fired yunomi, with dark brown decoration

For Hestekin, see item 134.

Gray clay, bluish-gray glaze, exterior decorated with dark brown glaze; base of foot ring left unglazed. Weight: 188 g (7 oz). Rim diameter: 7.3-7.6 cm (2-7/8–3.0 in); maximum diameter 7.6 cm (3 in); foot ring diameter: 5 cm (2 in). Height: 7.6 cm (3 in).

This sits on the base of the foot ring. The foot ring is 0.6 cm (1/4 in) high; the interior is hollowed out to about half this distance. Above the foot ring, the walls angle outward at about a 45-degree angle to a height of 1.3 cm (1/2 in). The artist’s marks, “EH” inside a square and a slightly larger square with three lines inside it, were pressed into this portion of the side walls. The maximum diameter occurs at this point.  Above this, the walls rise to the rim, angling slightly inward in most places. Roughly halfway up the cup, a groove was formed to serve as a grasping point for the cup. Here and there the walls show throw marks. The surface of this is smooth.

This was wood-fired to cone 10. The interior and exterior, with the exception of the base of the foot ring, are a bluish-gray color. Extending from the interior lip of the rim and angling down and across the exterior are three irregular splotches of dark brown glaze.  The edges of these splotches tend to be darker, almost black.

Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
