134. Evan Hestekin, wood-fired yunomi, with altered shape

134. Evan Hestekin, wood-fired yunomi, with altered shape

Hestekin lives in Cornucopia, Wisconsin, a hamlet bordering Lake Superior near Duluth. He mixes his own glazes. For more on him and other examples of his work, see his Instagram account @hestekinpottery.

Gray clay, ash-glaze on the interior; the exterior was left unglazed. Weight: 186 g (7 oz). Width: 6.4–7.6 cm (2-1/2 – 3 in); foot ring diameter: 4.7 cm (1-7/8 in). Height: 7.6 cm (3 in).

This sits on the base of the foot ring. The foot ring is about 1 cm (3/8 in) tall; the interior was hollowed out slightly less than this distance. Above the foot ring, the walls angle outward at about a 45-degree angle to a height of 1.3 cm (1/2 in). The artist’s marks, “EH” inside a square and a slightly larger square with three lines inside it, were pressed into this portion of the side walls. Above this, the walls were pushed inward on one side, creating an irregular shape. The external walls show strong throw marks. Beginning at the bottom, a shallow groove extends around the circumference of the walls, spiraling upward in a continuous movement. The exterior surface is rough.

The interior of this has an ash glaze; it is gray in color with many brown speckles where the clay shows through. The exterior was left unglazed; the colors from the wood-firing range from the gray of the clay through dark reddish-brown. The area of the exterior walls around the vertical dent is speckled with yellow spots. This same area had enough ash melt to create a sheen. This was fired to cone 10.

Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
