67. Maria Petty, small bowl
I was unable to find any information about Petty. I bought these pots at Feet of Clay Pottery in 2018, and she must have been associated with them either as a member or a student at that time.
Brown clay, glazed in blue and white; base left unglazed. Weight: 296 g (10.5 oz). Rim and maximum diameter: 11.5 cm (4-5/8 in); base diameter: 6.2 cm (2-1/2 in). Height: 7.5 cm (3 in).
This sits directly on the flat base. An “M” was incised into the base. From the base, the walls expand upward in a gentle arc to a height of about 4.4 cm (1-3/4 in), before rising in a more or less straight line to the rim. The rim has eight evenly spaced scallops, created by pressing a thumb into the exterior walls three-plus centimeters (about 1-1/4 in) down from the rim, leaving irregular dents in the walls of the pot.
With the exception of the base, the interior and exterior were first covered in a white glaze. A blue glaze was applied over this in a way that allowed the white to show through in random spots and streaks. Several places were not covered with glaze, and the naked clay shows through.
The random pattern of the white dots and streaks and the unglazed spots and the modeling make this pot interesting.
Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, in Brookline, Massachusetts, in April 2018.
