68. Maria Petty, bowl
For Petty, see item 68.
Brown clay, glazed in blue and gray; base left unglazed. Weight: 422 g (15 oz). Rim and maximum diameter: 16.3 cm (6-1/2 in); base diameter: 7.8 cm (3-1/8 in). Height: 7 cm (3 in).
This sits directly on the flat base. The artist’s initials, “MP” were incised into the base. The base is about 1 cm (3/8 in) high. From this, the walls first curve in a convex arc to just about the mid-point and then curve outward in a concave arc to the rim, which flares outward slightly. There are five, roughly spaced scallops in the rim.
This was decorated first with a blue glaze. A few dabs of white are randomly splashed across this surface. One side was then dipped into a translucent gray glaze; portions of the blue and the white glazes can be seen beneath this glaze. The rim of the bowl is brown. Throughout the surface is speckled with random black dots. The base was left unglazed.
Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, in April 2018.
