66. Michelle Stolzoff, small saucer

66. Michelle Stolzoff, small saucer

Stolzoff is a grad student and Boston-area potter. For other examples of her work, see www.feetofclay.com and her Instagram account: @michellethrowsthings. She sells her work through Etsy under MichelleThrowsThings.

Dark chocolate-colored clay, blue and clear glazes; base left unglazed. Weight: 120 g (4 oz). Rim and maximum diameter: 11.3 cm (4-1/2 in); foot ring diameter: 6.2 cm (2-1/4 in). Height: 1.8 cm (5/8 in).

This sits on the base of the foot ring. The foot ring is barely a sixteenth of an inch high on both the exterior and the interior. “MS 747” has been incised into the clay of the base; 747 may be a date: July 4, 2017 or 7 April 2017. From the base, the walls curve upward and outward to the rim. The rim has four, equally spaced scallops, forming a squared-off shape.

A wide strip of the top surface and portions of the interior and exterior walls were glazed in blue. The coverage was light, and the color of the clay shows through. It looks as if the blue was sprayed on. With the exception of the base, the piece was then covered with a clear glaze or luster.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, in December 2018.
