65. Kate McGuire, bowl
For McGuire, see item 63.
White clay, green celadon glaze; base of foot ring left unglazed. Weight: 758 g (1.7 lb). Rim (and maximum) diameter: 22.8 cm (9 in); foot ring diameter: 10 cm (4 in). Height: 5.8 cm (2-1/4 in).
The foot ring is about 0.6 cm (1/4 in) high. The interior of the base was hollowed out to a similar depth. “Kate” was incised into the base. From the foot ring, the walls of the bowl rise outward and upward in an elongated, flattened S shape, convex until the mid-point and then concave out to the rim. The underside of the rim was dented upward at three, irregularly spaced intervals along the rim, making inverse scallops.
The interior and exterior, with the exception of the base of the foot ring, were glazed in a fairly even coat of celadon green.
Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, in December 2018.
