64. Kate McGuire, small vase

64. Kate McGuire, small vase

For McGuire, see item 63.

Dark brown clay, white glaze; base left unglazed. Weight: 464 g (1 lb). Rim diameter: 6.3 cm (2-1/2 in); maximum diameter: 10 cm (4 in); base diameter: 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in). Height: 10.3 cm (4-1/8 in).

This sits directly on the flat base.  “Kate” has been incised into the base. From the base the walls rise outward and upward to the maximum diameter 3.3 cm (1-1/4 in) above the base. They then curve into the neck, which is 4.7 cm (1-7/8 in) in diameter and 8.8 cm (3-1/2 in) above the base. The walls then slant outward to the rim at about a 45-degree angle. The body of the vase has six vertical grooves running from the neck to the base spaced irregularly around the pot. The rim of the pot has been fluted at six evenly spaced points around the circumference.

Both the interior and the exterior of the pot with the exception of the base were glazed in white. The glaze pulled away from the rim slightly, exposing the brown clay beneath. On one side of the exterior body, the glaze is not as dense, and the brown color of the clay shows through shadow-like.

This is shaped along similar lines as item 63, but this pot has a much lower center of gravity, giving it a more weighty appearance. Much of McGuire’s work from this period had scalloped rims and grooved bodies.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2018.
