76. Erica Kirsners, miniature pot
Kirsners is a Boston-area potter. For other examples of her work, see her page at www.feetofclaypottery.com.
White clay, green glaze, base left unglazed. Weight: 198 g (7 oz). Rim width: 7.3–7.6 cm (2-7/8 – 3 in); base width: 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in). Height: 5.7–6.2 cm (2-1/4 – 2-5/8 in).
Potting doesn’t get any simpler than this. Take a ball of clay, insert your thumbs back to back, push them into the center of the ball, and form the walls between your thumbs and fingers. Press the resulting piece onto a work surface to flatten the base. Let dry, glaze it, and stick it in the kiln. This piece is an irregular oval of varying heights. The surface is bumpy. The artists’ initials, “EK,” and “17” are incised into the base. Presumably this means the piece was made in 2017.
A light green glaze was applied to the interior and the exterior with the exception of the base.
The piece is rough and crude. It probably was the work of a couple of minutes. It has given me many hours of pleasure.
Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2018.
