77. Erica Kirsners, teabowl

77. Erica Kirsners, teabowl

For Kirsners, see item 76.

White clay, green glaze; base left unglazed. Weight: 294 g (10.5 oz). Rim and maximum diameter: 17.5 cm (7 in); foot ring diameter: 6.3 cm (2-1/2 in). Height: 6 cm (2-3/8 in).

The foot ring is 0.8 cm (5/16 in) high on the outside. The interior has been hollowed out in a convex shape. “Kirsners” and “18,” presumably meaning that the piece was made in 2018, were incised into the base. The walls rise in a very shallow arc, almost a straight line, outward to the rim. The rim was flattened, producing a slight overhanging lip.

The interior and exterior with the exception of the base were glazed in green. An irregular band of lighter green was applied to both the exterior and the interior of the rim.

This could not be more different from the preceding item. It is impeccably formed in the classic “summer” teabowl shape. The surface was burnished smooth, and for a piece of this size, it is much lighter than one would expect. It is as elegant as item 76 is crude.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2018.
