60. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

60. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

For Wyman, see item 54.

Dark brown clay, russet glaze; the base was left unglazed as were those portions of the underside of the lid and the gallery in the bottom section that touch. Weight: 248 g (9 oz). Bottom section. Rim diameter: 6 cm (2-3/8 in); maximum diameter: 7.5 cm (3 in); base diameter: 4.4 cm (1-3/4 in). Lid. Diameter: 5 cm (2 in). Height: overall, 7.5 cm (3 in); bottom section, 5.7 cm (2-1/4 in); lid, 2.5 cm (1 in).

This sits directly on the flat base, which is an irregular circle. Three small, protective felt pads were affixed to the base. The walls rise in a steep arc outward to the maximum diameter, which is 4 cm (1-1/2 in) above the base. They then curve inward to the rim. The gallery on which the lid sits is recessed about a quarter inch below the rim. The underside of the rim is concave; The upper side is convex. The handle was formed from a roll of clay. About a third of the way in from each end, a deep line was incised into the clay around the circumference, dividing the handle into three parts. The ends of the roll were then pressed into the lid. The lid sits loosely in place.

Both the exterior and the interior were glazed in a russet color. The base, the outer rim of the underside of the lid, and the gallery on which the lid sits were left unglazed.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, in May 2019.
