59. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

59. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

For Wyman, see item 54.

Light gray clay, gray and blue glazes; base, rim of lid, and gallery on which lid rests unglazed. Weight: 158 g (5.6 oz). Bottom section. Rim (and maximum) diameter: 8.3 cm (3-5/16 in); base diameter: 2.5 cm (1 in). Lid. Diameter: 7.5 cm (3 in). Height: overall, 4.4 cm (1-3/4 in); bottom section, 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in); lid, 1.6 cm (5/8 in).

This sits directly on the flat base, which is an irregular six-sided polygon. The artist’s initials, “JSW,” were incised into the base. The walls of the bottom section rise in an even arc to the rim. The exterior walls have been flattened in irregular shapes in three rings around the circumference. The interior of this section has a gallery, about 0.3 cm (1/8 in) below the rim, on which the lid sits. The underside of the lid is concave. The upper side rises inward and upward from the rim in a shallow arc to a central knob. The lid has also been flattened in irregular shapes. The knob is an irregular, seven-side polygon. Its top is flat. The lid sits securely on the bottom section.

The ground is a gray glaze. Small splashes of blue glaze were applied randomly to the exterior surfaces of both parts. The underside of the lid and the interior of the bottom section have the gray glaze, with only one spot of blue in the interior. The glazes pulled away from the lines outlining the flattened bevels, leaving these lines much lighter in color and, in effect, emphasizing these shapes. The base of the bottom section, the outer edges of the underside of the lid, and the gallery on which the lid sits were left unglazed.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2018.
