61. Jennifer Wyman, small vase

61. Jennifer Wyman, small vase

For Wyman, see item 54.

Tan clay, blue-green glaze; base left unglazed. Weight: 222 g (8 oz). Rim diameter: 4.5 x 4 cm (1-3/4 x 1-1/2 in); maximum diameter: 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in); base diameter: 5 cm (2 in). Height: 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in).

This sits directly on the flat base. The artist’s initials, “JSW,” are incised into the base. The walls of the pot expand outward and upward from the base with two bulging horizontal bands, to the maximum diameter, which is 5 cm (2 in) above the base. Above this the walls slope inward in more or less a straight line, before rising to the rim. The body of the pot begins as a rough circle at the base but becomes more and more oval-shaped as the walls rise. The slope at the top has a pattern of variously spaced angular short gashes in the clay. The rim of the pot is uneven and slopes to one side. The finish of the pot is rough in places.

The reddish-brown slip is visible at the bottom and shows through the glaze at various points where it was scratched with a pointed tool in a spiraling line around the pot. The blue-green glaze was applied to both the interior and the exterior of the pot, with the exception of the base.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery in Brookline, Massachusetts, in December 2019.
