127. Anne Maraviglia, wood-fired oval vase

127. Anne Maraviglia, wood-fired oval vase

For Maraviglia, see item 126.

Gray clay, interior has a lining glaze, exterior colored by wood-firing. Weight: 1118 g (2.5 lb). Rim diameter: 5 x 2.8 cm (2 x 1-1/8 in); maximum diameter: 12 x 9.5 cm (4-3/4 x 3-3/4 in); base diameter: 5.4 x 4.7 cm (2-1/8 x 1-7/8 in). Height: 17 cm (6-3/4 in).

This sits on the flat base. After throwing, the shape was altered into an oval shape. The walls rise in continuous arc to the rim, reaching the maximum widths about halfway up. The artist’s mark is impressed in the exterior wall just above the base. The two wider sides are decorated with long, curving marks made with something like a racheted wheel. One side has the impressions of three small seashells. The wider sides have dents about a third of the way up. The surface bears the marks of paddles and is quite rough.

The interior of the vase is glazed. The exterior was colored by the wood-firing; the colors range from the natural gray of the clay through russets and creams. Ash melt has given the some of the surface a sheen.

This impressive piece is quite heavy and solid and definitive. It’s brutalist in impact.

Purchased from the artist in July 2021.
