132. Jake Brodsky, wood-fired vase
For Brodsky, see item 116.
Dark chocolate clay, colors from wood-firing. Weight: 632 g (1.4 lb). Rim diameter: 4.2 cm (1-5/8 in); maximum diameter: 11.3 cm (4-1/2 in); base diameter: 7.3 cm (2-7/8 in). Height: 12.5 cm (5 in).
This sits on the outer edges of the base; the interior of the base is very slightly concave. The body of the pot was slightly flattened above the base for a distance of about 0.3 cm (1/8 in). Above this the walls of the pot rise in a continuous convex arc to the rim. The edge of the rim is slightly rolled. The maximum diameter lies 6.7 cm (2-5/8 in) above the base. The texture of the exterior walls is rough and pitted. The artist’s mark, an asterisk shape inside a circle, was pressed into the exterior wall just above the base on one side.
The colors derive from the wood-firing and range from a golden brown through darker browns to gray and black. There are significant ash deposits. Melting of the ash created a sheen on one side of the pot.
A well-balanced pot, with an interesting interaction between the shape and the wood-firing.
Purchased from the artist, July 2021.
