81. Rachel Lecker, miniature vase

81. Rachel Lecker, miniature vase

For Lecker, see item 79.

White clay, black and white glazes, base left unglazed.  Weight: 82 g (3 oz). Rim diameter: 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in); maximum diameter: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in); base diameter: 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in). Height: 7.3 cm (2-7/8 in).

This sits directly on the flat base. “Rachel Lecker 2019” was incised into the base. From the base the walls curve in a convex arc to the rim. (The base had to be photographed against a dark background because the white portion of the walls disappeared against a white background, making the pot look distorted.) The maximum diameter is 4.7 cm (1-7/8 in) above the base. The walls of the pot were not smoothed; there are horizontal bulges around the circumference from the top to the bottom.  The piece is symmetrical, especially toward the top.

Both the interior and the exterior were first covered in white. Half the pot was then dipped in the black glaze both inside and out. On the exterior panels on both sides of the solid black area were covered with sprayed on dots of black, creating lighter black areas.

This and the items 79 and 80 were decorated similarly. The classical lines of the pots are broken up by the decoration.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, April 2019.
