79. Rachel Lecker, miniature vase

79. Rachel Lecker, miniature vase

Rachel Lecker is a Boston-area graphic designer and potter. She likes to create “geometric pottery” (see, for example, item 82). For other examples of her work, see rachellecker.myportfolio.com/ceramics.

White clay, glazed in black, gray, and white; base unglazed. Weight: 74 g (2.5 oz). Rim diameter: 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in); maximum diameter: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in); base diameter: 3.2 cm (1-14 in). Height: 6 cm (2-3/8 in).

This sits directly on the flat base. “Rachel Lecker 2019” was incised into the base. The walls rise outward in a gentle arc to the maximum diameter 3.7 cm (1-1/2 in) above the base. They curve inward slightly to the shoulder, where there is a definite break. The shoulder is 4.3 cm  (1-5/8 in) in diameter and 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in) above the base. The walls slope inward at a straight angle to the neck, which 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in) in diameter and 5 cm (2 in) above the base, and then flare outward in a straight line to the rim.

The interior and the exterior were first covered in white. The piece appears next to have been dipped at an angle into a gray glaze with black flecks and finally into a black glaze. The base and the walls immediately above the base were left unglazed.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, April 2019.
