42. Mark Bell, small bowl

42. Mark Bell, small bowl

For Bell, see item 41.

White porcelain clay, glazed in black and blue; base left unglazed. Weight: 334 g (12 oz). Mouth diameter: 5.3 cm (2-1/8 in); maximum diameter: 9.7 cm (3-7/8 in); base diameter 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in). Height: 7.5 cm (2-7/8 in).

The interior of the base was hollowed to create a foot ring, which is not apparent on the exterior. “Bell” was incised into the base. The pot flares outward and upward in a fairly straight line to a height of about 2 cm (3/4 in) above the base. It then curves outward to the maximum diameter 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in) above the base and then inward to the mouth. The pot sits solidly on the base.

The interior and exterior of the pot, except for the base, were evenly coated in a black glaze. The upper half of the exterior down to about the beginning of the curve is speckled with a blue glaze. The lower half of the pot is a solid black. The bottom is left unglazed.

This is a very well-balanced pot.

Purchased at the artist’s studio in Blue Hill, Maine, October 2017.
