43. Jody Johnstone, small, Bizen-style, wood-fired vase
Johnstone studied in Japan with a Bizen potter. In her studio in Maine, she has built a Japanese-style wood-fired tunnel kiln. For more information on her and her work, visit her website: www.jodyjohnstonepottery.com.
Gray stoneware clay, unglazed, colors from wood-firing. Weight: 192 g (7 oz). Rim diameter: 3.7 cm (1-1/2 in); maximum diameter: 7.5 cm (2-7/8 in); base diameter: 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in). Height: 8.7 cm (3.5 in).
This sits directly on the base. “Jody” was incised into the base. Remnants of the three wads used to separate pots in kilns are visible on the base. The walls of the pot curve upward and outward to the maximum diameter about 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in) above the base. The pot then curves inward to a diameter of 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in) some 7.5 cm (2-7/8 in) above the base. At the neck the pot curves outward to a diameter of 4.3 cm (1-5/8 in) about 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in) above the base, and then rises in almost a straight line to the rim.
The colors left from the wood-firing range from brown to black. One side of the pot has several light brown spots and one spot where the original color of the clay shows through.
Purchased at Mainely Pottery in Belfast, Maine, October 2017. (Mainely Pottery has an excellent selection of the works of potters in Down East Maine.)
