151. Joseph Bounds, volcano vase

151. Joseph Bounds, volcano vase

For Bounds, see item 149.

Black clay, unglazed. Base: 9.5 x 6.3 cm (3-3/4 x 2-1/2 in). Height: 11.3 cm (4-1/2 in).

This sits directly on the base, which is a highly irregular oval in shape. The bottom is mostly flat; a few small bumps and dents do not prevent the piece from having a solid footing. The base is roughly 0.6 cm (1/4 in) high, but the top surface is pitted and jagged. The vertical part varies in width from 6.3 cm (2-1/2 in) at the bottom to 2.5 cm (1 in) at the top. The surface of this section is rough and unfinished; there are two vertical panels where the surface has been smoothed with a grooved blade. A hole about 9.2 cm (3-7/8 in) deep was bored from the center of the top down almost to the base.

The surface of this has a slight sheen.

A solid, inventive, deceptively crude piece that reflects light in unusual ways, a pleasure to hold and examine. Bounds also made a similar piece with white clay, but it doesn’t work as well.

Purchased from the artist in October 2021.
