8. Oribe sake cup (choku)

8. Oribe sake cup (choku)

Gray clay; glazed in gray, green, and brown; the base of the foot ring was left unglazed. Weight: 76 g (2.7 oz). Rim diameter: 6 cm (2-1/2 in); base diameter: 3.5 cm (1-3/8 in), Height: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in).

The background glaze on this sake cup (Japanese: choko 猪口) is grayer than most Oribe glazes; there is a fine pattern of crackling across the entire surface.  On the outside near the top, two rings have been incised into the clay. The rim of the cup and three decorative squiggles were done in brown (probably an iron-rich slip). One edge of the cup was dipped in green glaze, which pooled in thick drip on the inside of the cup. A circular foot ring was added to the base of the cup.

Purchased at the Japan Trade Center in San Francisco in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
