92. Kari Wojtanik, black-and-white pit-fired pot

For Wojtanik, see item 91; for more on her pit-firing techniques, see item 100.

White clay, no glaze, colors from pit-firing. Weight: 510 g (1.1 lb). Rim diameter: 8 cm (3-3/16 in); maximum diameter: 11.3 cm (4-1/2 in); base diameter: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in). Height: 13.3 cm (5-1/4 in).

The pot sits directly on the base. The walls rise in a high-shouldered convex arc to the neck. The pot reaches the maximum diameter at 8.8 cm (3-1/2 in) above the base. The neck is 8.3 cm (3-1/4 in) in diameter and is 1.8 cm (3/4 in) high. It begins at 11.3 cm (4-1/2 in) above the base. The exterior walls were burnished and are quite smooth. The neck has been scored with grooves running around the circumference.

The colors come from the pit-firing; Black predominates, with patches of gray and white. The interior is a dusty black.

This is similar to the item 91 in shape and color.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2019.
