55. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

55. Jennifer Wyman, miniature lidded container

For Wyman, see item 54.

Light gray clay, brownish-green glaze; foot ring, the gallery on which the lid sits, and underside of lid left unglazed. Weight: 178 g (6.3 oz). Bottom section—rim diameter: 4.7 cm (1-7/8 in); maximum diameter: 7.7 cm (3-1/8 in); foot ring diameter: 3.2–3.5 cm (1-1/4 – 1-3/8 in). Lid: maximum diameter: 3.3 cm (1-5/16 in). Height: overall—7 cm (2-3/4 in); bottom section—5.2 cm (2-1/8 in); lid—2.2 cm (7/8 in).

The foot ring is a rough circle, relatively wide for a piece of this size. It is about 0.3 (1/8 in) high; the interior has been hollowed out to a similar depth. Above the foot ring, the walls arc outward and upward to the maximum diameter about 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in) above the base, and then curve inward to the rim. The rim angles downward inward slightly to a gallery about 0.3 cm (1/8 in) below on which the lid sits. The upper sides of the walls have been flattened slightly to create concentric rings of bevels around the pot. On one side, the walls of the pot were deeply scored in a random pattern of lines. The underside of the rim was roughly formed into a convex shape. On the upper side, the edge of the lid is flat; one area has been marked with incised lines. A central post supports a pyramidal shape that serves as a grasping point. Several lines were incised into the surface of this knob. The lid fits loosely on the bottom section.

The interior and exterior of the pot were glazed in a brownish-green color. The foot ring, the underside of the lid, and the gallery that supports the lid were left unglazed.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, April 2018.
