83. Rachel Lecker, small pot

83. Rachel Lecker, small pot

For Lecker, see item 79.

Reddish-brown clay, blue and brown glazes; base and lower portion of walls left unglazed. Weight: 212 g (7.5 oz). Rim diameter: 1.5 cm (9/16 in); maximum diameter: 7.5 cm (3 in); foot ring diameter: 4.3 cm (1-3/4 in). Height: 7.5 cm (3 in).

This sits on the foot ring, which is less than a sixteenth of an inch high on the outside. The interior of the ring was hollowed out half this depth. “Rachel Lecker” was incised into the base. From the foot, the walls rise outward in an arc to the maximum diameter 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in) above the base and continue upward in an inward sloping shallow arc to the shoulder at 4.8 cm (1-7/8) above the base. There is a break at the shoulder and the walls move inward in a straight line at a 45-degree angle to just below the rim. At that point they continue upward for about an eighth of an inch in a short vertical line to the rim

With the exception of the base and the bottom half-inch or so of the walls, the pot is covered in a brown glaze. Coverage is heavier in some areas than in others. Faint splashes of blue appear along the bottom edge of the brown glaze.

Purchased at the annual winter sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, December 2019.
