94. Kari Wojtanik, multicolored pit-fired pot

White clay, no glaze, color from pit-firing. Weight: 258 g (9 oz). Rim diameter: 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in); maximum diameter: 7.5 cm (3 in); base diameter: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in). Height: 13.2 cm (5-1/4 in).

This sits directly on the flat base. “Kari” was incised into the base. The walls rise in a shallow convex arc to the neck. The maximum diameter lies 6.3 cm (2-1/2 in) above the base. The neck is 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter and is 12.5 cm (5 in) above the base. The walls were burnished and are smooth, except for a few rough spots. Perhaps those are ash deposits.

The colors—blacks, grays, reds—come from the pit-firing. There are large areas where the color of the clay dominates. Except for the area just inside the mouth, the interior of the pot is white.
