101. Dana Farkas, “rustic black bud vase”

101. Dana Farkas, “rustic black bud vase”

Farkas began potting in 2018. She describes her work as focusing on simplistic functional forms. For further examples of her work, visit her Instagram account at @danalouisepottery.

Brown clay, black and blue glazes; base left unglazed. Weight: 506 g (18 oz). Rim diameter: 7.2 cm (2-13/16 in); maximum diameter: 8.8 cm (3-1/2 in); base diameter: 9.3 cm (3-5/8 in). Height: 12.8 cm (5-1/8 in).

This sits directly on the flat base. “Dana” was incised into the base. The walls of the pot rise in more or less a straight line to the maximum diameter at 10.3 cm (4-1/8 in) above the base. They then curve inward to the first break at 11.7 cm (4-5/8 in); the diameter at the break is 7.8 cm (3-1/4 in). From there the walls angle inward in a straight line to the second break, 12 cm (4-3/4 in) above the base and 7 cm (2-3/4 in) in diameter. The walls then rise to the rim at a sharp angle.

The pot was glazed in light blue inside and out. A matte black glaze was applied to the upper part of the exterior and just inside the mouth of the interior. The blue glaze has many reddish-brown spots and streaks. The interior is much streaked with red. One side has a patch of dark blue and black with a sheen (visible in the third photo, at the junction of the blue and black sections), which contrasts with the matte finish elsewhere. The bottom was left unglazed.

The label “rustic black bud vase” comes from the artist. This was sold as a second because of several bumps on the exterior walls. The blemishes are quite minor. The decoration of this piece has flair; it only seems rustic.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, May 2021.
