57. Jennifer Wyman, pair of small vases

57. Jennifer Wyman, pair of small vases

For Wyman, see item 54.

A (smaller vase). Dark brown clay, cream, black, and brown colors; base of foot ring left unglazed. Weight: 220 g (8 oz). Rim width: 6.2 cm (2.5 in); maximum diameter: 7.3 cm (2-7/8 in); foot ring diameter: 4.2 cm (1-5/8 in). Height: 9.2 cm (3-5/8 in).

On the outside the foot ring is about 0.6 cm (1/4 in) high. The inside of the foot ring has been hollowed out to a depth of a sixteenth of an inch. The artist’s initials, JSW, were incised into the base. From the foot ring the walls curve outward and upward in a smooth arc to the maximum diameter 3.2 cm (1-1/4 in) above the base. They then curve inward to the neck, which is about 8 cm (3-1/8 in) above the base. From the neck the walls rise more or less in a straight line to the rim.  The rim has been shaped into a rough square with bowed sides. This reshaping affects only the rim; below that the pot is circular.

B (larger vase). Dark brown clay, cream, black, and brown colors; base of foot ring left unglazed. Weight: 280 g (10 oz). Rim width: 6.7 cm (2-5/8 in); maximum diameter: 7.7 cm (3 in); foot ring diameter: 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in). Height: 11.4 cm (4-1/2 in).

On the outside the foot ring is about 1 cm (3/8 in) high. The inside of the ring has been hollowed out to a depth of a sixteenth of an inch. The artist’s initials, JSW, were incised into the base. From the foot ring the walls curve outward and upward in a smooth arc to the maximum diameter 4.5 cm (1-3/4 in) above the base. They then curve inward to the neck, which is 6 cm (2-3/8 in) in diameter and begins 8.8 cm (3-1/2 in) above the base. From the neck the walls curve outward slightly to the rim. The rim has been shaped into a rough square with bowed sides. This reshaping affects only the rim; below that the pot is circular.

Both pots have a low center of gravity. The maximum diameter of the larger pot is only a bit larger than that of the smaller one, and they have almost the same dimensions at the top. The walls of the larger pot are drawn out over a greater distance, and it has a longer and more pronounced neck.

The decoration scheme is the same for both pots. The interiors are glazed in cream and brown. The upper parts of the walls down to the area of the neck have a dark yellowish-brown color. The interiors and the neck regions have a lustrous finish. The lower parts of the exterior walls appear first to have been covered in a cream-colored slip. A black slip was applied over this. From the direction of the lines, it appears that this black coloring was applied horizontally around the pot. Coverage by the black slip is uneven. It grows increasingly less dense toward the bottoms of the pots. The exterior of the foot ring of each shows only the cream color.

Purchased at the annual spring sale at Feet of Clay Pottery, Brookline, Massachusetts, April 2018.
