46. Hillary Rousselle, pit-fired vase
Rousselle works in Pembroke, New Hampshire. She was a student of Elaine Fuller (see item 47), and this pot was fired at the same time as item 47. For more on her and samples of her work, visit her website: www.rousselleceramics.com.
Gray clay, no glaze, colors from pit-firing. Weight: 858 g (1.9 lb). Rim diameter: 8.2 cm (3-1/4 in); maximum diameter: 10.7 cm (4-1/4 in); base diameter: 9.5 cm (3-3/4 in). Height: 17.7 cm (7 in).
This pot sits directly on the base. The maximum diameter is 4.5 cm (1-5/8 in) above the vase and from there the walls slope gently inward to the neck, which is 7 cm (2-3/4 in) in diameter and about 15 cm (6 in) above the base. At the neck, the pot again slopes outward to the rim. A “H” is stamped into the side of the pot just above the base.
The colors come from the pit-firing, which used seaweed. The upper part on one side was relatively uncolored by the fumes and smoke. The opposite side has a heavy coating of ash. Colors include blacks, grays, and a reddish brown.
Purchased at The Red Door Pottery Studio, Kittery, Maine, September 2019.
