6. Oribe square dish

6. Oribe square dish

White clay, glazed in cream, green, and brown, with a luster overglaze. Weight: 810 g (1.8 lb). Dimensions: 17.5 x 17.5 cm (7-1/8 x 7-1/8 in). Height. 4.2 cm (1-3/4 in). Bottom is unglazed and has several spatula marks.

The green band across the middle is used to separate the bottom of the dish into two pictures fields, one featuring a flower design, the other has two squiggles. On the inside, a narrow dark brown bank runs about half a centimeter {a quarter of an inch) down from the rim around the dish; it is covered over by the green band at the two corners. The rim of the bowl is covered with brown as well, again covered over by the green band at the two corners. Each side consists of a green band to the right or left facing four leaf shapes banded on each side by vertical lines in brown.

This is a recent manufacture; The design and colors are those found in traditional Oribe, but the clear shiny luster is not. The green is bluer than si found on most Oribe The piece is so shiny it could have been salt- or soda-fired. This is an example of commercialized Oribe.

Purchased in the late 1980s or early 1990s at the Japan Trade Center in San Francisco.
