21. Joyce Quyle, Large wide-mouthed pot

 21. Joyce Quyle, Large wide-mouthed pot

Joyce Quyle (1922–2007) began potting in 1941. In 1954 she and her husband founded Quyle Kilns in Murphys, California, in the Sierras.  Besides pottery, the business also produced clay for sale to other potters. The business is now run by their daughter Pamela (website at quylekilns.com). This was one of six pots of different shapes, glazed in the same color. I was told that Quyle had made the pots to demonstrate typical shapes for her students.

Tan clay, with dark reddish-brown glaze; base of the foot ring is unglazed. Weight: 1958 g (4.4 lb). Rim diameter: 17.7 cm (7 in); base diameter: 11 cm (4-5/16 in); widest diameter 20 cm (8 in); diameter of foot ring: 11 cm (4-5/16 in). Height: 16 cm (6-1/4 in).

Wheel-thrown. The foot ring is a scant 1.3 cm (1/2 in) on the outside and about half that on the inside. “JQuyle” is incised into the base. The body of the pot is an even convex arc, with the widest point just above the middle. At the top of the arc, the diameter is about 14.5 cm (5-3/4 in). The lip of the pot is just under 1.3 cm (1/2 in) high and slants outward slightly.

The entire pot with the exception of the base of the ring foot was given a dark reddish-brown glaze. The color is uniform throughout.

Purchased at Quyle Kilns in 1990.
