32. Miniature Chinese teabowl with resist design
Dark grayish-brown clay, black and gold glazes; base left unglazed. Weight: 48 g (1.7 oz). Rim diameter (also maximum diameter): 6.6 cm (2-9/16 in); foot ring diameter: 2.8 cm (1-3/16 in). Height: 2.8 cm (1-3/16 in).
This has the classic teabowl design and was produced in Shandong province in China. The person who gave this to me explained that the interior of the piece was first covered in a gold glaze. A small maple leaf was place in the center of the interior. The black glaze was applied over this. When the piece was fired, the leaf vaporized. After cooling, the area of the black glaze over the leaf was easily removed.
Unfortunately it’s not visible in the picture, but the stem and the tiny veins of the leaf are clear and distinct, as is a small tear in the leaf. The technique of creating such designs through resist techniques utilizing leaves has a long history in China and is found particularly in Jizhou ware.
Gift, received in 2008.
