17. Oribe small oval dish
Light gray clay; glazed in gray, green, and brown; bottom left unglazed. Weight: 158 g (5.5 oz). Dimensions: 13 x 9.5 cm (5-1/8 x 3-5/8 in). Height: 1.3 cm (9/16 in).
A serving dish for small items in a formal Japanese meal. This appears to have been shaped in a mold; the lines of the cloth used to separate the clay from the mold are visible on both sides. A spatula was used to create three long, shallow marks on the bottom, smoothing out the marks left by the cloth. The surface of the interior and the sides of the exterior have a yellowish-gray ground. The rim is outlined in brown, and a brown slip applied with a Japanese brush was used to create the two decorative elements. Green glaze was applied over one end of the interior. On the exterior a little of the green glaze ran down this end of the piece, creating irregular, light-green blotches.
Purchased at the Japan Trade Center in San Francisco in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
